Ahhhhhh.. Camp! Got to camp yesterday about 4:30. Unloaded all of our stuff into our room and then went off to the dining hall to eat and spend a couple of hours hanging out with all our friends. One of the campers and her husband had Famous Dave’s cater an awesome dinner for us! Thanks so much for that!
As soon as I got out of the van I felt at home again! The feeling you get when you finally walk into your house exhausted, after a long trip. It’s amazing! All of our friends eventually arrived and after dinner, everyone split off and did their own thing. Lauren and I made a nice fire and spent some time with some of our closest buds. Great night!
Today we got up at noon and went to the hall for lunch. Now I’m sitting on a bench enjoying the cool weather, while Lauren is hangin out with a couple of her friends. It’s so nice! They have been discussing personal horror stories about accessibility. It seems everyone has had bad experiences involving getting in and out of buildings and no one knows the ADA laws. I’m so sick of not being able to find a handicapped parking space, and having to be a gymnast holding 2 doors open so Lauren can drive through. Being “accessible” means more than painting a wheelchair on a regular parking spot.
We have a restaurant near us that has one handicap spot. It has ONE curb cutout for the entire building. BUT, they don’t have any curb stoppers along the building, so when cars pull up to the regular spots, their hoods block the entire sidewalk! Umm that’s not accessible.
Now the group had grown to 10. 5 people in chairs and 5 attendants. It’s cool to have a place to just hang out and discuss the issues that they relate to every day. This place rocks. There is no “disability” here. Just a ton of cool people hanging out and having fun. And when someone needs help with something, everyone helps out. Everyone here can do anything in the world, with a little help.
